Abstract

The general concern of this research is writing skill. Thereby, the main concern of this research is the use of picture book in writing activities for young learners. Regarding to this research, the researcher uses The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, a richly visual storybook that is appropriate and ideal to share in several languages for young learners and explore how words in different languages describe the same scenes. This study is initiated to focus on how the implementation of writing activity by using picture book for children in EFL setting. The aims of this research is to know the implementation of the picture book in writing activities for students in the classroom. The data obtained from observation, students writing, interview and documentation. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher explained, described and also summarized the use of picture book in writing activities for young learners in narrative form. The findings of this research described there were three type of writing activities; controlled writing activities, guided writing activities and free writing activities. The implementation of writing activities based on using picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar for third grade students of Shine English Course Kalibagor was ran well and acomplishable for them, it made the teaching and learning process meaningful and was not monotonous. Furthermore, the researcher suggest that teacher should be selective in choosing English picture book and consider several aspects that influence students in learning English especially writing skill. Thus students must practice more writing and increase their motivation in learning English.
