Abstract

Hum, Ph.D. External Examiner: Dr. Lynda Susana W.A.F, S.S, M.A. The research entitled “Mother Figure Depicted in Everything My Mother Taught Me (2019)” aims to find out the issue of mother figure whether in biological mother or non-biological mother in Adeline’s perception as the main character of Everything My Mother Taught Me by Alice Hoffman (2019). In constructing this research, the researcher applied a qualitative method to analyse the data. This research uses a short story entitled Everything My Mother Taught Me by Alice Hoffman (2019), books, journals, articles, and online research related to psychology literature, motherhood, mothering, and character and characterization as the data. To analyse the data, the researcher uses motherhood and mothering theory as the grand theory. The discussion is only one chapter, it is the shape of the mother figure based on Nora Ivie’s incomplete motherhood and Julia’s mothering work in nurturing the child. The result of this study shows that the mother figure in Everything My Mother Taught Me by Alice Hoffman (2019) does not exist in the biological mother. On the contrary, it exists in another woman who has no blood relation with Adeline. This mother figure can be seen from the display of love, care, protection, and support.
