Abstract

This research is aimed at identifying the sign found in the Turning Red movie and explaining the kinds of friendship issues reflected by those signs. The field of this research is semiotics which is the study of sign systems to know how the signs are related to each other in discovering certain meanings. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data which are 13 scenes representing friendship in Turning Red movie. The researcher employs Barthes' semiotics theory as a foundation for the connotation, denotation, and myth conveyed through the friendship scene among the characters. Since Turning Red movie raises several issues related to friendship, the researcher also employs Wood's friendship theory (2013) as a complementary which is divided into four elements: intimacy, acceptance, support, and trust. The result of this research is first, each scene contains denotation, connotation, and myth related to the friendship issue. Second, the scene in Turning Red movie exposes 8 scenes representing friendship in verbal data and 5 scenes in nonverbal data. In verbal data, 3 out of 4 friendship characteristics based on Wood’s theory (2013) which is intimacy, acceptance, and support can be found through the dialogue between each character besides the trust scene, since there are no utterances that lead to trust. The most of friendship issues found in verbal data are support and intimacy since both of them have the same amount of data which is 3 scenes representing friendship. In terms of nonverbal data, all of the friendship elements which is trust, intimacy, acceptance, and support are depicted in Turning Red movie. The friendship issue that is mostly shown in nonverbal data is acceptance. Acceptance develops through the interaction between each character.
