Abstract
This research entitled ―Deconstruction of Characteristics on Devils and Gender Stereotype in Gidwitz‘s Children Literature The Grimm Conclusion” aims to analyze characteristics‘ deconstruction. The focus of the research is to analyze the deconstruction of devils and children‘s gender charateristics. The researcher uses qualitative method in analysing the main data of the research. They are the narrations, acts, and dialogues in Gidwitz‘s The Grimm Conclusion. For data analysis, there are sorting, classifying, checking, examining and concluding the data. To answer the research question, the researcher uses Jacques Derrida‘s theory of deconstruction. It is a method of literary analysis which challenges traditional assumption about certainty, identity, and truth. The characters have been examined by using Jacques Derrida‘s deconstruction theory which emphasizes on challenging the meaning of text itself. The result of the research covers two major groups of characters which consist of devils and children characters that are deconstructed by the author. The devils are Lukey and Lukey‘s grandmother while the children are Jorinda and Joringel. Lukey and his grandmother are deconstructed by contradiction of evil and inhuman characteristics. On the other hand, Jorinda is deconstructed by contradiction of dependent and passive characteristics, and Joringel is deconstructed by contradiction independent and active characteristics. Therefore, the author aims in deconstructing those character for breaking the typical stereotype and gives a new perspective to the readers especially on the streotype of devils and children‘s gender characteristic since there is a binary opposition in the deconstruction theory.
