Abstract

This job training report is entitled “Translating Short Story “Persahabatan” from Indonesian into English (A Wattpad Short Story by Ika Ayu Rahmawati)”. The job training activity was carried out on June 8 to July 20, 2023 with the aims of translating the short story “Persahabatan” by Ika Ayu Rahmawati from Indonesian to English, explaining the process and the technique in the translation, and describing the difficulties and giving the solutions in the translation. The “Persahabatan” short story is a teen fiction story published on the Wattpad app in 2020. This short story has been read by more than 24,000 users and voted about 301 times. “Persahabatan” tells about a friendship led by a fifteen years old little girl named Aria. With her friends Fanny, Valtra, and Victor. Aria share a story, joys and sorrows. The methods used in the job training are observation and direct practice. In the observation method, what was done was observing several applications where there were short stories in it which were used as an object of job training, reading several short stories in the Wattpad application, and determining the short story used as a translation object. Moreover, what was done in the direct practice method is that 14 translation techniques were used: adaptation, borrowing, amplification, description, calque, compensation, discursive creation, established equivalence, particularization, reduction, transposition, variation, literal, and modulation. The translation processes that followed were tuning, analysis, understanding, terminology, restructuring, checking, and discussion. The obstacles found in job training activities there were the difficulty of finding the right interjection words and onomatopoeias in the target language. Then, there are some writing errors from the source text on Wattpad. However, the obstacles could be overcome with several solutions, including using the internet to find varieties of Interjections, using adaptation techniques to find Onomatopoeias, using the KBBI (Indonesian Dictionary) website, and discussing with the supervisors regarding the writing errors. In conclusion, this job training was carried out through several stages from the use of methods to the discovery of solutions to several problems.
