Abstract

This job training report is entitled “Translating Polapike’s Short Movie (the Episode of “Arti Sebuah Nama”) from Indonesian to English”. This activity was carried out on June 19, 2023 - July 23, 2023 with the aim of translating Polapike's short film from Kebumen entitled "Arti Sebuah Nama" from Indonesian to English, knowing the obstacles experienced during the job training process, and finding the right solution in dealing with obstacles. The methods used during job training are observation, literature study, and hands on practice. What was done in the observation method were observing several short films from the Polapike YouTube channel by watching several episodes, and choosing one of the episodes used as the object of job training. Then, the literature study method collects some data on related theories through online journals, and articles. The hands on practice method is carried out by translating Indonesian subtitle text into English. The results show that there are 11 techniques (out of 18 techniques) used in translating the movie. They are literal translation, adaptation, transposition, reduction, variation, established equivalent, pure borrowing, amplification, generalization, compensation, and description. During translation, the translation process used is analysis, transfer, restructuring, evaluation and revision. The obstacles include difficulties in understanding translation techniques that make it difficult to determine translation techniques. Another obstacle found was the difficulty in determining the right word equivalent. However, these obstacles can be overcome with several solutions, such as reading journals that discuss translation techniques or discussing them with friends.
