Abstract
This study examines the subtitling strategy and the acceptability of the politeness expressions in the Bumi Manusia movie. The researcher categorized the politeness expressions using theory of politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987), subtitling strategies theory by Cintas and Remael (2014), and translation quality assessment theory by Nababan, et al (2012) to determine the subtitle’s acceptability level. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with focus group discussion (FGD) and the raters’ questionnaire answers were used to analyze the data. The data in this research are in the form of utterances representing Minke’s politeness expressions in the Bumi Manusia movie and collected using purposive sampling. The findings show there are 43 types of politeness expressions uttered by Minke in the Bumi Manusia movie. The results show there are four categories of politeness expressions; those are bald on record (19%), positive politeness (30%), negative politeness (42%), and off record (9%). For the subtitling strategies, the results show that 8 strategies were applied. Those are; loan (2%), calque (30%), explicitation (19%), substitution (7%), transposition (14%), compensation (12%), omission (9%), and addition (7%). the study also found that most of the subtitles were considered acceptable (84%), with only a small percentage were found to be less acceptable (16%). This indicates that the subtitles in the Bumi Manusia movie have a high level of acceptability, indicating overall satisfactory quality. In summary, the use of calque strategy positively affects the quality of translation, especially when translating negative politeness, accurately portraying the form and meaning of the original subtitle, resulting in a highly acceptable subtitle.
