Abstract

Textbooks are crucial for improving the quality of learning, serving as the main guide for both teachers and students. Educational resources are selected in accordance with guidelines from the Minister of Education and Culture and the National Education Standard Agency (BSNP) to ensure their quality. English instructors are mandated, based on Minister of Education and Culture Decree Number 71 of 2014, to use English textbooks as their pedagogical reference in alignment with the implemented curriculum. However, the researcher' observation revealed that the readability level of these textbooks, both from the government and other publishers, has not been examined. To solve this problem, researcher will use method called Fry Graphs. By evaluating the quantity of sentences, the accuracy and erroneous terms used, the presence of passive voice, and other factors, this method can be used to measure the readability level of a textbook. This research aimed to focus on the level of readability of textbook for 12th grade students, with the title of the textbook "Bahasa Inggris Kurikulum 2013" published by the Government. From eighteen reading text, eight text have been taken as sample, and divided into four types of reading text. Those are descriptive, advertisement, news items, and procedure texts. Based on the research that has been carried out, the level of Fry Graph for descriptive texts are 9 and 10, advertisement texts are 5 and 6, news items texts are 6 and 7, and procedure texts are 7 and 7. None of these scores reached the 12th-grade level. The maximum level of this score is found in second descriptive text that equivalent to the 10th-grade level. Therefore, following the Fry Graph Formula's assessment, it is evident that the texts are not accessible for senior high school students in the 12th grade.
