Thesis. Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Jenderal Soedirman University, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Language Education, English Education Study Program, Purwokerto. Phonological interference occurs when learners produce language. Language interference occurs when a learner transfer features of their first language into the second language, this can include phonological features, such as pronunciation, intonation, stress patterns as well as grammatical lexical, and orthographic features. The researcher purpose to find out (1) what phonological interference occurs in pronouncing English consonant sounds. The researcher also purpose to find out (2) factors affect the phonological interference in pronouncing English consonant sounds. This is qualitative research with a descriptive study approach. The research data collected using the word reading list, interview, and questionnaire. The research participants were 6 students at sixth semester students enrolled at the English Education Study Program of Jenderal Soedirman University. The research results showed that (1) from the word reading list, almost all of the students have miss pronounce the words and mostly in the consonant sounds. From 6 students, researcher found interference that occurs, 41 types interference of sound substitution, 27 types interferences of sound addition, 18 types of interference of sound deletion, and 6 types of interference of sound modification in reciting English sounds consisting of 24 consonant sounds.; (2) based on the interview and questionnaire from students showed that students the main factors that causes interference is language proficiency. The interference occurred not because it was intentional by students, but their habit of using Banyumasan language in their daily environment that affect when they speak English which is not their daily language. It was also proof that the problem of students in pronouncing English is caused by a lack of students’ knowledge of phonology, less practice in pronouncing English words, not familiar with English words, transfer of Banyumasan language, the difficulty in recognizing phonetic symbols and limited vocabulary of the target language mastered by students.
