Abstract

The term multimodality describes the use of several forms of communication to convey meaning. Trailer as a mode of communication is one example of how multimodal communication can be strategically used to construct meanings and deliver information. This research aims to investigate how multimodal tools in “Elden Ring” video trailer can formulate and convey several layers of meanings and deliver information to the audience. The method used in this thesis is a descriptive qualitative method and purposive sampling is used as the sampling method. The data source used in this research is from YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqiC88f9ogU). The data are the verbal, visual, and aural components in the official trailer of Elden Ring. The theory used in this thesis is Maier’s generic stage of video trailers (2011). The analysis shows that there are explicit and implicit context in the trailer of "Elden Ring" according to Maier's framework. Each of them consistently contributed to the achievement of the promotional purposes. However, their contribution is realized through different informative means. There are 5 stages of explicit context that can be found in the trailer of "Elden Ring". They are promotional identification (2 data) which introduces foregrounds meaning, such as film company, directors and actors, promotional recapitulation (8 data) which provides an overview of the characters and plot of the film trailer, promotional interpretation (2 data) which shows what kind of influence the audience can get from the video trailer, promotional recommendation (1 data) which purposes to give advice to the audience, and promotional information (2 data) which provides additional non-diegetic information. On the other hand, the implicit context consists of 4 stages. They are prologue (2 data) which serves as the opening segment to attract the audience, orientation (2 data) which provides necessary context and background information, complication (3 data) presents a major problem or conflict that disrupts the main characters' lives, and evaluation (4 data) which provide an interpretation of the trailer's events or results. the analysis of generic stages of video trailer by Maier (2011) in the trailer of "Elden Ring" has presented the functional relationship existing between all the generic stages of trailer of "Elden Ring" to achieve the trailer’s overall goal that is to promote the game.
