Abstract

The study titled "Subtitling Strategies and Readability of Mind Field Season 1 Episode 1" aims to uncover the various types of representative speech acts by Yule (1996), the employed subtitling strategies in translating these acts using theory proposed by Gottlieb (1992), and the overall readability of the subtitles of the representatives speech act, employing theory by O’Brien (2010).. Utilizing a qualitative method, the research employed purposive sampling to select relevant samples, focusing on the utterances of the host, Michael Stevens, in Mind Field Season 1 Episode 1. The findings revealed four types of representative speech acts in the episode: asserting (14,28%), assessing (2,04%), concluding (16,33%), and describing (67,35%%). The predominance of describing acts is attributed to the educational nature of the series, demanding comprehensive explanations. Regarding subtitling strategies, the results indicate the prevalence of transfer (59,18%), followed by deletion (13,26%), paraphrase (12,24%), condensation (5,10%), dislocation (4,08%) and expansion, imitation, transcription (each 2,04%). Transfer emerges as the most frequently employed strategy, as it enhances the understanding of the text for native speakers of the target language, especially when compared to alternative strategies. In relation to the readability, among the 98 utterances analyzed, 87 utterances (88,78%) are highly readable and the remaining 11 (11,22%) were categorized as readable. Notably, the readable texts mostly consist of longer passages and texts that may appear unnatural to native speakers of the target language, potentially leading to moments where readers need to pause or reread for complete understanding. Future research could involve analyzing additional episodes within the same Mind Field series or exploring the same episode from diverse perspectives to enrich the outcomes.
