Abstract

This job training report is entitled “Translating Brandon Hill’s Short Movie “On Another Note” Into Indonesian Subtitle”. The job training carried out from August-September 2023. The purpose is to translate a short movie subtitle from YouTube by Brandon Hill entitled “On Another Note” from source language (English) to target language (Indonesian). In translating “On Another Note” short movie, there are four stages taken in the translation process such as analysing stage, transferring stage, restructuring stage, and evaluating stage. Moreover, there are fourteen translation techniques (out of eighteen) that have been used to translate this movie. Literal translation is the dominant technique followed by established equivalent, borrowing, calque, variation, linguistic compression, linguistic amplification, description, modulation, particularization, adaptation, compensation, amplification, and discursive creation is the least. In the process of translating the short Note movie there are several obstacles, such as lack of car machine-related vocabularies, the difficulty of translating word with other meanings, the difficulty in determining the translation technique used, and lack of expertise in video editing. The solutions include consulting with the supervisor about the translation results and studying the vocabulary of car engines, looking for synonyms of words in the source language, learning more about theories related to translation techniques, and learning the features of video editing applications for subtitles. The conclusion is that the Indonesian subtitle of the short movie "On Another Note" can be used for Indonesian viewers, so they can enjoy the movie because it contained of moral value. In addition, there were also a lot of experience gained from this job training process such as gaining new vocabulary knowledge and knowing the translation process along with the techniques used to translate.
