Abstract

This research entitled “Depression Symbolized in The Neighbourhood’s Female Robbery Music Video: A Semiotic Analysis.” is aimed to find signs used in The Neighbourhood’s Female Robbery music video and how those sings symbolize depression. Furthermore, it also explains the myth of the music video. The researcher uses qualitative method in analyzing the data which are 11 scenes of The Neighbourhood’s Female Robbery music video that symbolize depression. The results of this research are signs which consist visual, verbal , and auditory signs. The visual signs consist of anything displayed on the screen such as character, gesture, setting, and atmosphere. The verbal signs consist of the lyrics of the song and any textual signs on the screen. The auditory signs consist of the music’s dynamic and music instrument’s sound in the song. Then, the signs in the music video expose depression symptoms which are restless sleep, anxiety, attention deficit, helpless, hopeless, feeling worthless, and avoidance of social interaction. Those depression symptoms have been listed in Darton, Bhowmik, and Borril concept of depression. From all the depression signs in the music video reveal that the depression comes from the girl’s parents molestation and inharmonious family life. However, it shows her transformation to be braver and stronger to start moving on from her derpession and lead the better life.
