Abstract
This research entitled ―Discursive Strategies Used by Donald Trump in His Political Speech at The 72nd Session of The United Nations General Assembly: A Critical Discourse Analysis‖ focuses on discursive strategies on Donald Trump‘s speech. It is aimed at explaining the way Donald Trump justify his action to isolate North Korea. The research is done by identifying the discursive strategies and the concept of critical discourse analysis. The primary data are taken from Donald Trump‘s utterance, while to support the analysis, the supporting data are the transcript of the speech. In analyzing the data, this research uses qualitative method. The researcher analyzes the discursive strategies based on Wodak‘s theory; moreover, critical discourse analysis is analyzed based on Fairclough‘s theory The result of the analysis shows that Donald Trump used his power as the President of the United States to empower his speech, meanwhile the America First doctrine, the values of democracy, human rights and sovereignty became the main ideology of Donald Trump to discredit North Korea. From the discourse practice, Donald Trump used the United Nations as the venues to get the world‘s support and in the sociocultural practice, Donald Trump‘s speech can lead nations toward conflict. Furthermore, the researcher finds the discursive strategies, they are nomination, predication, argumentation, perspectivation and intensification. From the analysis, the use of nomination and predication strategies are the most frequently used. It indicates the way Donald Trump uses discursive strategy to justify his political action by giving an attribution of positive and negative traits to the United States and North Korea. Meanwhile, argumentation acts to convince the world about the threat of North Korea and reminds the leaders‘ responsibility to overcome the problem. Perspectivation acts to give Trump‘s own perspective in his capacity as the President. Finally, intensification acts to intensifies Trump‘s statement concerning the United States‘ positive traits and His political view towards North Korea. It suggests that those strategies are used to strengthen Trump‘s political action to isolate North Korea.
