Abstract
This research is entitled “An Analysis of Female Gaze Through Character Development in the Birds of Prey Movie.” It investigates the transformation of superhero movies, with a particular emphasis on the emergence of influential female characters and their effects on established gender norms. This research also scrutinizes the escalating popularity of superhero movies and their societal impact, underscoring the necessity to confront conventional gender clichés, taking movies as a pivotal case study to probe into the concept of the female gaze in superhero movies. The literature review utilizes feminist film theory, male gaze, female gaze, character development, and cinematography. The research method applied is qualitative research, with Birds of Prey movie serving as the primary data source, enriched by pertinent literature. The analysis, grounded in feminist film theory, is encompassing multiple screenings and concentrated data gathering. The findings of this research involve the character development of Harley Quinn, Renee Montoya, Black Canary, and Huntress in the Birds of Prey movie and show how the experiences, motivations, and transformations of these female characters are portrayed in the movie, showcasing their growth and development throughout the movie. Each character undergoes a positive change arc, transitioning from initial challenges to empowerment and self-discovery. This research concludes by encapsulating the findings and validating the substantial contribution of character evolution to the depiction of the female gaze. It proposes future research trajectories, including the utilization of the female gaze in scrutinizing character appearances and fashion in movies.
