Abstract

This thesis is entitled “Translation Strategies of English Idioms and Its Indonesian Subtitling in Netflix: Enola Holmes 2 Movie.” The research focuses on analyzing how English idioms are translated into Indonesian subtitle using types of idiomatic expressions by Fernando’s theory (1996) and translation strategies of translating idiomatic expressions by Baker’s theory (2018) in Enola Holmes 2 Movie. Based on using qualitative method as the research design, the research aims to find out the types of idioms and translation strategies applied in the Indonesian subtitle of the movie. After analyzing the data, the researcher found 89 data of idiomatic expressions in the movie. The result is the translation by paraphrase strategy is dominating the idiomatic expressions found in the movie translated into Indonesian subtitle. However, there are 2 data of semi-idiom type using the strategy of using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, and 1 datum of literal idiom type using the translation by omission of the entire idiom strategy. Translation by paraphrase dominates the translation strategies used by the translator, overcoming space limitations and conveying idiomatic meanings in a concise way for readability. The next researcher can use the same theory to examine different objects, and examine the same object using different theories.
