Abstract
This research intends to analyse the cultural terms categorization, the translation techniques, and the acceptability in the novel The Women of the Castle. This research employs the theories of cultural terms categorization by Newmark (1988), translation techniques by Molina & Albir (2002), and translation quality assessment in the acceptability by Nababan et al. (2012). To address the research questions, this research employs the qualitative descriptive research method and the results obtained from raters' questionnaires are considered in the data analysis process. This research's data include 128 cultural terms found in the novel classified into 4 categories: material culture (44%), social organisation (33%), ecology (16%), and social culture (8%) with material culture being the most common types of cultural terms. The results show that the novel employs 8 translation techniques: borrowing (59%), amplification (25%), adaptation (4%), calque (3%), established equivalent (3%), generalisation (3%), literal translation (2), and reduction (1%) with borrowing technique as the most used techniques. Furthermore, the data's acceptability score is mainly acceptable with 64.8% of the entire data classified as acceptable, 32.8% as less acceptable and 2.3% as unacceptable. Thus, the translation techniques of cultural terms in The Women of the Castle are deemed to be acceptable and the translator has provided an adequate translation for the readers. This research finds that there is a relation between translation techniques and its acceptability divided into 3 levels: 1) positive contribution, 2) positive and negative contribution, and 3) negative contribution. This research also proved that the type of cultural terms and the availability of equivalent words in the target language are the two factors that affect the acceptability score of the cultural terms; the techniques used to translate them have no bearing on this.
