Abstract

This research entitled “Representation of Experiences Through Transitivity and Tense Selection in The Song Lyrics of Twenty One Pilots‟ Blurryface Album (A Stylistic Study)” aims to: (1) describe the type of transitivity process and tense selection applied in the song lyrics of in Twenty One Pilots‟ Blurryfacealbum, (2) To define the most dominant transitivity processes and tense selection applied in the song lyrics of Twenty One Pilots‟ Blurryfacealbum. I use descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data of the research which are song lyrics from Twenty One Pilots‟ Blurryfacealbum. The data are retrieved from listening to the lyrics and confirm them using the data in online lyric database. This research applies Halliday (1985) transitivity process and Frank (1972) verb tense to answer the research questions. This research uses Systemic Functional Grammar approach to analyze the representation of experience through transitivity process applied in the data. Transitivity can reveal the experience embodied in a clause such as experience of doing, thinking, being, saying, behaving, existing, and happening. The result of the research is there are 7 out of total 7 processes found in the data of the research which are material, mental, relational, verbal, behavioural, existential, and meteorological. Material process, that is a process showing an experience of doing, is the most dominant process. It means the songs are focuses on concrete actions. Second, the most dominant verb tense applied in the data of the research is present tense. It means the experiences in the songs are conveyed to be or are happening in present time, or presented as general truth by the songwriter.
