Abstract

The researched entitled “The Logotherapy Concepts in Zach Sobiech’s Journey as Depicted in Clouds (2020)” aims to examine how Zach Sobiech applied Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy concepts to navigate the challenges of living with bone cancer, as portrayed in the film Clouds(2020). Utilizing a descriptive qualitative methodology, this study analyzes the film and its script to explore Sobiech’s embodiment of Logotherapy’s basic concepts: the characteristics of human existence, the will to meaning, and the meaning of life. Findings reveal that Sobiech’s optimistic, humorous, and cheerful nature enabled him to actively pursue meaning in life despite his terminal illness. His college essay offers profound insights into his existential worldview and his search for purpose, aligning with Frankl’s three sources of meaning: creative, experiential, and attitudinal values. Sobiech’s transformation from a sensitive and pessimistic individual due to his bone cancer to a hopeful and accepting one demonstrates the power of Logotherapy in finding meaning in the midst of suffering. Future research could expand upon these findings by analyzing the memoir written by Sobiech’s mother.
