Abstract

This research aims to investigate the implementation of the Spelling Bee game in improving the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students at SMPN 5 Cilacap in the academic year 2023/2024. Specifically, it seeks to (1) find out whether or not the implementation of the Spelling Bee game improves students’ vocabulary mastery and (2) figure out the students’ responses to the Spelling Bee game in improving their vocabulary mastery. The research includes a pre-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest. The sample of this research consisted of 32 students of seventh-graders class F which were selected through purposive sampling. The data were collected through tests, interviews, and documentation. For the test instrument, the data were collected from 32 students using pretest and posttest to measure their vocabulary mastery. In addition, to figure out the students’ responses to the implementation of Spelling Bee game in improving their vocabulary mastery, the data were collected through an interview. The research findings showed that the implementation of the Spelling Bee game significantly improved students’ vocabulary mastery. Furthermore, the students’ responses also showed positivity which said that the implementation of the Spelling Bee game was effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. These findings reveal that by using Spelling Bee game can be an alternative teaching tool in order to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery.
