Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation techniques and acceptability rates for the technical terms in the Honkai Star Rail video game's "Universe in a Nutshell" achievement tab. This research was decided in consideration of the wide range of backgrounds among the game's user population, therefore this research aims to discuss and describe the translation techniques used and the acceptability rate collected from the raters in the translation of the technical terms in the achievement tab. This study, by using a descriptive qualitative research approach, identified technical terms by playing the Honkai Star Rail video game and analyzed each of the achievements inside the “Universe in a Nutshell” achievement tab, and delivered questionnaires to the raters in order to determine acceptability rates using the method proposed by Nababan (2012). The research provides the data as mentioned: there are a total of 48 technical terms that appeared in “Universe in a Nutshell” achievement tab which contains 92 achievements, with the translation techniques used being 66.6% of borrowing technique; 20.8% of particularization technique; 10.4% of description technique; and 4.2% of amplification technique. On the other hand, there are only 41 achievements that contains technical terms out of 92 achievements in “Universe in a Nutshell” achievement tab, with the acceptability rate consists of acceptable (39%); less acceptable (61%); and not acceptable (0%). Accordingly, the excessive use of the borrowing technique results in a monotonous style of translation, thus the highest rating of the acceptability aspect is less acceptable based on the rating given by the raters. The frequent use of borrowing techniques is likely due to players who engage with the game in multiple languages preferring the English terminology, as it is the default language. An analysis of the translation of the Honkai Star Rail game, particularly in the "Universe in a Nutshell" achievement tab, highlights how important linguistic acceptability and cultural relevance are to keeping players interested in playing Honkai Star Rail video game.
