Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of idioms that appears in the Marvel series Moon Knight (2022) and the usage of translation strategy that is used to translate the idioms found in the series. This research uses descriptive qualitative method, as a guideline for this research to analyze the idioms found in Marvel series Moon Knight. The theme was chosen in consideration of the wide range of ages that watches Marvel Cinematic Universe. This research identified idioms and classified each of them into different types while also investigating the strategy used to translate a specific idiom. In the Marvel series Moon Knight, this research has found the data as mentioned: Literal idioms, semi-idioms, and pure idioms all appear with almost equal frequency. This balanced occurrence shows that the series uses a wide variety of idioms to reflect the depth and complexity of the language used. Paraphrase was the most commonly used translation strategy (75.5%), indicating that translators prioritized conveying the meaning of idioms in a way that was culturally and linguistically appropriate for the target audience. The lower frequency of transfer (15.1%) and deletion (9.4%) suggests that direct translations were less suitable, and that removing idioms was rarely required, focusing on the importance of preserving original expressions in translated subtitles. The data show that the paraphrase strategy is far more frequently used than other strategies. This is mainly because paraphrasing allows the translator to adjust idiomatic expressions to the cultural and linguistic nuances of the target language. Using paraphrase, the translator can change how the utterance sounds in Indonesian, ensuring that it resonates with the audience while retaining the original meaning and tone. This approach is especially important for literal and semi-idiomatic expressions, where a direct translation may not achieve the intended result, as well as pure idioms, where cultural context is important. Paraphrasing allows you to rephrase these expressions, making them more accessible and natural to the intended audience.
