Abstract

This research mainly analyzes the kinds of emotive function, translation techniques, and accuracy in the lyrics of 13 songs in Taylor Swift’s Midnights album. This study uses the descriptive-qualitative method. Among 105 lines from the 13 songs, this study identifies 13 kinds of emotive functions from Jakobson's (1960) theory, with preference and intention being the most frequent. As for the translation technique using Molina and Albir's (2002) theory, there are 10 types of translation techniques found, with modulation and literal translation as the most predominant techniques. Nababan et al. (2012) assess the translation accuracy and reveal that most translations are accurate with a percentage of 55.24%. This research discovers that emotive functions do not significantly affect accuracy; instead, the types of language in the lyrics play a crucial role. Therefore, all kinds of emotive functions are spread unevenly across the translation technique and accuracy data. As for technique and accuracy, modulation, the predominant technique, shows that translating rich metaphoric lyrics with this technique largely results in less accuracy. Meanwhile, literal translation presents that the lyrics written with literal language mainly result in accurate translations.
