Abstract
The journal tells us about the most serious nuclear accident in the history of the nuclear industry occurred on April 26, 1986 at Unit 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant reactor in the country formerly known as the Ukrainian Republic of the Soviet Union. The explosion that destroyed the containment and core structure of the reactor caused a fire that lasted 10 days and caused the release of large amounts of radioactive material into the environment. The cloud originating from the burning reactor spread various types of radionuclides, especially iodine (¹³¹I) and cesium (¹³⁷Cs), to almost all parts of Europe. Radionuclide ¹³¹I, a compound that targets the thyroid gland and has a short half-life (8 days), was released into the environment in large quantities in the first few weeks of the accident. Meanwhile, the radionuclide ¹³⁷Cs, which has a longer half-life (30 years), contributing to external and internal radiation exposure to the body, is still detected in soil and in several foods originating from several regions in Europe. The largest radionuclide deposits occur in the area around the reactor which is now known as Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
