Abstract
Metaphor is a figurative expression used to describe something in terms of another expression. Translating metaphors has consistently posed challenges due to their cultural influences. This research explores the metaphors in the film “US” (2019), focusing on identifying metaphor categories and translation strategies based on Newmark’s framework, while accuracy is assessed with Nababan’s theory. A qualitative descriptive methodology was applied, utilizing a total sampling approach to examine all metaphorical expressions identified in the film. The findings show a diverse range of metaphor types and translation strategies. The results revealed six metaphor categories, with standard metaphors being the most employed with 17 data and recent metaphors the least with 2 data. The most employed strategy was converting metaphors to its sense with 18 data, while combining metaphors with the sense was the least with 1 datum. The translation accuracy was high, with 28 data rated as accurate and 9 as less accurate. The frequent use of standard metaphors reflects their familiarity in everyday language, while converting to sense or literal language enhanced translation accuracy as it accurately conveyed the intended meaning.
