Abstract
This research arose from the problem of students’ reading comprehension and the lack of learning media in school. Based on these issues, the researcher aimed to prove the effectiveness of text-related pictures in improving the reading comprehension of seventh-grade students at MTs Ma’arif NU 1 Patikraja. Text-related pictures are one of the media that can be applied to improving students’ reading comprehension. The purposes of this research are: (1) to find out the significant effect of text-related pictures to improve students’ reading comprehension; (2) to figure out the implementation of text-related pictures; (3) to investigate students’ responses towards the implementation of text-related pictures. This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. Students in seventh grade at MTs Ma’arif NU 1 Patikraja were the population in this study. There were two classes as the sample of this research. Seventh-A were used as the experimental group, while Seventh-D were used as the control group. In this research, the data were collected through tests, observation, and questionnaire. The results of this research indicate that in the results of the tests, the average of the pre-test of the experimental group was 68.53, while the average of the post-test was 77.60 with the difference between pre-test and post-test mean scores was 9.07. The results of the pre-test of the control group were 57.60 and the post-test was 58.93 with the difference between pre-test and post-test mean scores was 1.33. Furthermore, the resulted significant value was 0.000 < 0.05, which means that text-related pictures was significantly effective in improving students’ reading comprehension. The results of a questionnaire filled out by the experimental group to support the finding showed that 97% of students strongly agreed that the implementation of text-related pictures helped them to improve reading comprehension. It can be concluded that text-related pictures had a significant and positive effects on the students' reading comprehension, text-related pictures was successfully implemented, and students were strongly agreed that text-related picture were useful to improve their reading comprehension.
