Abstract
This research discusses the translation of aviation term words and phrases in the movie Downfall: The Case Against Boeing by Rory Kennedy. The aim of this research is to find out the aviation category, translation technique, and translation quality, especially the acceptability of the translation in Downfall. The analysis of translation techniques is based on the theory of Molina and Albir (2002) and the assessment of translation quality by Nababan, et al. (2012). This research applied a descriptive qualitative method. The results show that four categories of aviation terms were identified: Aircraft Components (52.94%), Flight Operations (25.49%), Units of Measurement (11.76%), and General Aviation Concepts (9.80%), reflecting the film’s emphasis on technical elements such as engines, wings, and control systems. Among the translation techniques used, Established Equivalent was the most frequently applied (32.08%). Other techniques included Literal Translation (16.98%), Calque (15.09%), and Borrowing (11.32%). The quality assessment revealed that the majority of translations (52.83%) were deemed acceptable, 45.28% less acceptable due to unnatural phrasing or grammatical issues, and only 1.89% unacceptable due to unfamiliarity and lack of clarity. Overall, the study highlights that while some translations were acceptable, improvements are necessary to enhance the naturalness and clarity of aviation terminology in the target language.
