Abstract

This study analyzes the translation strategies and accuracy of auto-generated subtitle of aviation’s terms in Captain Joe’s vlog. Using Gottlieb (1992) translation strategies theory and (Nababan et al., 2012) translation quality assessment theory, the data include all aviation terms in two vlogs of Captain Joe’s. The findings identify six types of translation strategies. The most frequent strategies used is transfer with 42 data (71.19%), paraphrase with 7 data (11.86%), transcription with 4 data (6.78%), expansion with 3 data (5.08%), imitation with 2 data (3.39%), and the last resignation with 1 data (1,69%). Of the 59 data, 41 data are categorized as accurate. However, the less accurate number is also quite high at 21. This shows that auto-generated subtitles have not been able to translate specific terms or specialized terms such as aviation terms that are less familiar.
