Abstract
This research investigates the perceptions of English Education students from the class of 2022 at Jenderal Soedirman University regarding gamification in Duolingo and its effects on their motivation and retention in learning English. Gamification elements such as leaderboards, streaks, and badges are believed to enhance learning by making it engaging and interactive. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through structured interviews and questionnaires with five purposively selected participants. The first finding, based on interviews, reveals that gamification enhances motivation and retention, with features like leaderboards fostering competition and achievement. The second finding, also from interviews, highlights that repetition and interactive features improve vocabulary and grammar retention, increasing confidence in using English. The third finding, derived from questionnaire data, shows that motivation arises from a balance between intrinsic enjoyment and extrinsic rewards, though limitations like premium features were noted. Overall, students view Duolingo’s gamification as fun and effective for learning English.
