Abstract

This research focused on the analysis of conjunctive relations translation in the novel Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. The study applied Halliday and Hasan's (1978) theory on types of conjunctive relations, Molina and Albir's (2002) theory on translation techniques, and Nababan's (2012) translation quality assessment framework, particularly emphasizing the aspect of acceptability. The findings revealed five types of conjunctive relations: adversative (28 data, 45.90%), additive (17 data, 27.87%), temporal (8 data, 13.11%), causal (6 data, 9.84%), and continuative (2 data, 3.28%). Six out of eighteen translation techniques were employed: literal (43 data, 70.49%), amplification (9 data, 14.75%), established equivalent and reduction (each 3 data, 4.92%), adaptation (2 data, 3.28%), and modulation (1 data, 1.64%). The overall acceptability score from three raters averaged 2.92, indicating that the translation of conjunctive relations in Morrie’s utterances was acceptable. This study provided insights into the translation of conjunctive relations and highlighted the importance of ensuring quality in translation to achieve high acceptability.
