Abstract
This study aims to analyze the meaning of signifier, signified, and sign from Saussure’s semiotic perspective in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict as represented in memes on the Coffee or Die webpage titled "Here are the Best Memes from the War in Ukraine." The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a semiotic approach to interpret the signs and meanings within the memes. The data consists of 13 memes, categorized based on Catanescu & Tom’s meme typology. The findings indicate that the comparison category appears 2 times (15.38%), personification is absent (0%), exaggeration appears 2 times (15,38%), pun 2 times (15.38%), sarcasm 3 times (23.08%), silliness 1 time (7.69%), and surprise 3 times (23.08%). These results suggest that memes related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict on Coffee or Die predominantly utilize sarcasm and surprise to convey satire and criticism of the situation. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how memes as digital media shape public perception through visual and linguistic representation within the realm of semiotics.
