Abstract

This study explores the exploitation of Nigerian female migrant workers in the context of sex trafficking along the Nigeria–Italy migration route from 2017 to 2020. Using a qualitative approach and grounded in the theoretical framework of capitalism and patriarchy, the research investigates how global economic systems and gendered power structures intersect to commodify women's bodies and normalize their subordination. Findings reveal that capitalism creates a global market that thrives on inequality, turning impoverished women into commodities within the sex trade. Simultaneously, patriarchy reinforces gender norms that render women more vulnerable to exploitation, both within family structures and broader society. Many Nigerian women are pushed to migrate due to poverty, lack of education, and socio-cultural pressures, often under the pretense of work or study opportunities abroad. However, upon arrival, they are trapped in exploitative systems that rely on high market demand and weak legal protections. Exploitation occurs across all stages of migration—from recruitment in Nigeria, through illegal transit routes, to the indirect legalization of sexual labor in Italy’s liberalized market. The intersection of race, class, gender, and migration status amplifies their vulnerability. This study highlights the need for structural solutions that challenge both capitalist exploitation and patriarchal domination, as well as policy reforms that ensure the protection of migrant women’s rights.
