Abstract
This study examines the types of cultural terms based on Newmark’s (1988) theory, translation procedures according to Davies’s (2003) framework, and the translation quality of acceptability following Nababan’s (2012) criteria, specifically within the context of the English subtitles of Aruna dan Lidahnya. A descriptive qualitative approach is employed to explore how translation procedures affect audience comprehension of cultural terms. The data was collected from the movie’s dialogue and subtitles, and then evaluated by three raters using specific assessment criteria. The researcher identified 43 instances of cultural terms, categorized into four types: material culture (62.79%), social culture (25.58%), social organization (6.98%), and ecology (4.65%). Six translation procedures were observed, with transformation being the most frequently applied (41.86%), as it modifies cultural terms to make them more suitable for the target language. This was followed by preservation (18.60%), addition (18.60%), globalization (11.63%), localization (4.65%), and omission (4.65%). Although procedures such as transformation, addition, and globalization were commonly used, the findings reveal that their application does not always guarantee acceptable translations. The acceptability analysis shows that 58.14% of the translations were considered acceptable, 37.21% less acceptable, and 4.65% unacceptable. Nearly half of the translations were rated less acceptable, indicating that while generally understandable, many still require further attention and refinement. Therefore, although the overall translation acceptability quality can be considered satisfactory, there remains room for improvement in achieving greater naturalness and clarity.
