Abstract
This research explores how Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is represented through the character of Georgia Miller in the Netflix series Ginny & Georgia (2021), created by Sarah Lampert. Employing a qualitative approach, the study applies Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory (id, ego, superego) alongside Heinz Kohut’s theory of narcissism (self-object needs, narcissistic deficits, grandiosity, and self-soothing). The findings indicate that Georgia Miller exhibits key characteristics of NPD, including manipulative, exploitative, and destructive behavior—even to the extent of committing murder. She frequently uses her charm and intelligence to control others and maintain her self-image, showing little to no empathy, even toward her own children. This study analyzes pivotal scenes in Ginny & Georgia using Graeme Turner’s film language theory to demonstrate how visual elements reinforce Georgia’s narcissistic narrative. The analysis reveals that an imbalance among the id, ego, and superego, coupled with unmet narcissistic needs, can contribute to the development of a manipulative and destructive personality. Ultimately, this research contributes to the study of fictional characters in modern literature through a psychological lens.
