Abstract
This study analyzes the semiotic meanings in the promotional posters of Django Unchained (Tarantino, 2012), set in pre-Civil War America (circa 1858), exploring themes of slavery, resistance, revenge, emancipation, and friendship across four posters using Barthes’ (1977) semiotic theory (denotation, connotation, myth) and Wierzbicka’s (1996) color symbolism. Addressing two questions—(1) How do denotative and connotative meanings in the main poster reflect the film’s central themes and narrative? and (2) How are myths constructed and perpetuated through semiotic elements?—the findings reveal 24 denotations, 24 connotations, and 24 myths (six each in Datums 1 and 2, five each in Datum 3, seven each in Datum 4), conveying a narrative shift from resistance and revenge to emancipation and friendship. The main poster’s denotative (e.g., characters with pistols) and connotative (e.g., red blood splashes symbolizing violence) meanings reflect slavery and revenge, while myths like the Western hero archetype and reimagined American Dream perpetuate individual triumph, often oversimplifying historical complexity. The study concludes that Barthes’ and Wierzbicka’s frameworks effectively decode these themes and myths, suggesting deeper exploration of Barthes’ theory and extension to other media like advertisements for enriched semiotic analysis.
