Abstract

Humor is a complex nuanced phenomenon, and its translation poses unique challenges, particularly in the context of audiovisual media, where timing and space constraints must be considered. This research investigates the subtitling strategies and the acceptability of humor translation in the “Deadpool & Wolverine” movie (2024), focusing specifically on the humorous utterances of the character Deadpool. This study aims to identify the types of humor found in Deadpool’s utterance, the subtitling strategies employed by the translator, and the acceptability of the translated humor from English to Indonesian. Utilizing Hay’s (1995) classification of humor, Gottlieb’s (1992) subtitling strategies, and Nababan’s (2012) translation acceptability assessment model, this qualitative descriptive study examined 234 data of humor from the movie. The findings reveal that observational humor is the most common type of humor found (22.7%) because the Deadpool character often responds to situations or statements from his interlocutors with spontaneous and witty comments rooted in the immediate context of the scene, while the paraphrasing strategy is most often used in translation (27.4%) because the structure or meaning of Deadpool’s humor often requires sentence restructuring that keeps the humorous message clearly and culturally relevant, and the majority of the translation results are in the acceptable category (61.5%) because the choice of strategies used by the translator is able to maintain the flexibility of the language, cultural appropriateness, and Deadpool’s distinctive humor style that makes it sound natural to the target audience. These results underscore the importance of culturally aware and context-sensitive subtitling strategies to preserve humor and ensure naturalness in the target language. This study contributes to audiovisual translation studies by providing insight into how humor can be effectively rendered across languages and cultures through subtitling.
