Abstract

This study discusses about students' learning experiences using Magic Box as a learning media to improve speaking skills in 4th semester class A students majoring in English Education, Faculty of Humanities, Jenderal Soedirman University. Based on this, the research aims include: (1) to determine students' perceptions of using Magic Box media to improve students' speaking skills; (2) to determine the implementation of Magic Box as a learning media to improve students' speaking skills; (3) to find out the problems and solutions experienced in the implementation of Magic Box as a learning media to improve students' speaking skills. This research uses the theory from Sarhang & Furwana (2020) regarding Magic Box as a learning medium. This research uses a qualitative method with a narrative inquiry design. Class A 4th semester students in the English Language Education Department, Faculty of Humanities, Jenderal Soedirman University are the population of this research. Five students were involved in this research according to predetermined criteria. In this research, data collection was carried out through interviews and document study. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis and document analysis. The results of this research showed a positive perception of the use of Magic Box as a learning medium. Learning using Magic Box media maked the material easier to understand and helped students improved their speaking skills, especially vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency and level of confidence. Meanwhile, the problems experienced by students during learning with Magic Box included difficulty finding content and lack of mastery of vocabulary. The solution given to this problem is to look for references and divide tasks among group members. Therefore, researcher recommended that teachers be able to use Magic Box media continuously in various types of language skills especially for reading comprehension.
