Abstract

The aim of this study is twofold. The first is to explore and empirically examine the electronic commerce (e-commerce) adoption level, its benefits and how the benefits are perceived by Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SME) in Japan. The second is to try to draw and present relevant and useful implications for the future needs of the e-commerce users in Asia. In order to discover how the adoption of e-commerce going on in SMEs and how the benefits are experienced post adoption, regression analysis is chosen. The type of research is hypotheses testing by using random sampling technique. The population of this study is micro, small and medium enterprises in Japan. In this study, data collection comes from primary sources, the survey and unstructured interview, and secondary sources which are books, archives, annual reports, and other published information. Analysis on White Paper on Small and Medium Enterprises by Government of Japan shows that more than half of the enterprises have done the hardware and software introduction in their business. But, significant numbers of business, which is approximately 37%, still don’t even appreciate the importance of e-commerce adoption even enterprises in the developed country like Japan. The survey results reported that “Increase revenue”, “Reduce marketing cost”, “Increase customer loyalty and retention”, “Improve supplier relationship”, and “Extending market reach” are the benefits which are realized by the SMEs.
