Abstract

This research entitled “An Analysis of Felicity Condition Found in Female Characters of Isn’t It Romantics?”. It aims to know the kinds of feminine speech styles in female characters in Isn’t It Romantics? movie, and to find out the felicity condition in each feminine speech style that described in Isn’t It Romantics? movie. I used descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The primary data are utterances which are produced by female and male characters in Isn’t It Romantics? movie. This research focuses on sociopragmatics approach. Additionally, I used Holmes and stubbe theory (2003:574) to analyze the feminine speech style in each female utterance. I also used Yule’s theory (2003:50) to find out felicity condition. The result of this research shows that amongst 473 female utterances, there are only 277 utterances that contain the feminine speech styles. Collaborative becomes the most widely used feature by female characters. Moreover, I found that all of the utterances use the types of speech act. Representatives become the most dominant features produced by female characters in their speeches. I suggest the next researchers who are interested in the same field to examine and conduct more in-dept analysis about speech act, which can focus on only one or some types of speech act like representatives or declarative only. They can also differentiate the object by recording everyday conversation between them and native speakers. Besides, speech texts can be an alternative way for the researcher who wants to focus on one gender.
