Abstract

It is a research of translation technique and translation quality which focuses on the women-related swear words translation in the “True Beauty” and “Lookism” Webtoon comic in term of acceptability. This research was conducted to find out the translation techniques applied by the translator in translating women-related swear words and to know the impact of translation technique on the translation quality in acceptability level. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method and used total sampling technique. The data of this research is the utterances that contain women-related swear words both in English and Indonesian. While the source of data in this research is the Webtoon comics entitled “True Beauty” and “Lookism”. The data of this research were obtained by using content analysis based on the theory of translation technique proposed by Molina and Albir and the questionnaire. This research shows the result that there are two functions of swear words, they are: First, 1) Expletive (30 data) and Expletive (25 data). Second, there are five translation techniques which the translator applies in translating to the target language, they are: 1) Generalization (29 data), 2) Adaptation (14 data), 3) Particularization (8 data), 4) Reduction (3 data), 5) Calque (1 datum). Third, the result of the acceptability level from the questionnaire shows that the women-related swear words is quite acceptable. Therefore, it can be concluded that the translation quality is affected by the translation technique applied by the translator.
