Abstract

This research entitled “Deconstruction of Dracula Character in Genndy Tartakovsky’s Hotel Transylvania Movie (2012)”. The aim of the research is to analyze the deconstruction found in Count Dracula character in Hotel Transylvania movie. The deconstruction is seen from the different characteristics found in Dracula character in the movie from Dracula’s original character written or made by Bram Stoker in his novel Dracula. The qualitative method is used in analyzing the main data of this research. In answering the research question, Deconstruction theory by Jacques Derrida and cinematography theory by Blain Brown and Mascelli is used to support the findings of this analysis since the object analyzed is a movie. Deconstruction theory is used to find the differences for the characters through dominant and non-dominant binary opposition. Since the object of the analysis is a movie, cinematography is needed to see the character’s emotions through scenes of the movie. The result of this research depicts that the deconstruction of Dracula character is found in count Dracula character in Hotel Transylvania movie. The result is categorized into eight different characteristic that are deconstructed namely living alone, has no friends, sucking blood, inviting human to his house, ruthless, aloof, quiet/ mysterious and cold. Those characteristics of Dracula are being deconstructed into living with a family member, has many friends, vegetarian, having fear of human in his house, loving/ affectionate, friendly, talkative, and warm. The eight characteristics can be seen from Dracula’s actions towards other character and explanation in every scene. Cinematography helps to strengthen the proofs of the analysis of the character’s deconstruction.
