Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the meaning represented by the signs in Rupi Kaur's Milk and Honey and to explain what kinds of feminisms they represent. Semiotics, which is the study of sign is the approach of this research. The data for this study, which comprised of 18 photographs of female figures, were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method. The study's findings include the fact that each image contains signs, such as icons, indices, and symbols. All of the image's replicas, ripoffs, likenesses, and imitations of actual objects are considered icons. The index consists of any indications of a causal relationship, whether they take the shape of images, words, phrases, or sentences in pictures. Symbols include all signs that have a certain meaning when associated with the context in the image. Out of a total of 4 kinds of feminism put forward by Steeves (1987), the signs in the pictures only show 2 kinds of feminism, namely radical feminism and liberal feminism. The idea of radical and liberal feminism is an issue that Kaur tries to raise in her poetry and paintings. Since radical feminism is a movement that believes sexism is deeply rooted in society, Kaur brings these ideas to light by highlighting women's oppression of their own bodies. As for liberal feminism, the idea is described about how Kaur views herself and the women around her as a subjected position in society. In addition, Kaur, who is tanned skin kaukasoid indic woman, also associates the idea of liberal feminism with the inequalities that women get in education, the workplace, and gender roles in society.
