Abstract
This research entitled "Transforming One Direction through Fanfiction: A Fans Study on Anna Todd's After, which is purposed to analyze the transformation of One Direction portrayed in After and the reasons behind its transformation. This research used qualitative method in analyzing the data. The main data of this research are After novel, One Direction‟s autobiography books and questionnaires taken from personal communication with Anna Todd. The data are analyzed using Henry Jenkins' theory of fanfiction. There are several steps that are needed to be done in order to answer the research question. First, I collect the data from the novel, One Direction‟s autobiography books, questionnaire and online articles. Second, I classify the data based on the theory of fanfiction by Jenkins. Third, I analyze the data on how Todd transforms One Direction into the version of character in the novel and why she makes those transformations. Lastly, I conclude the findings. In result, there are five types of transformations that are reflected in After, namely: moral realignment, character dislocation, personalization, emotional intensification, and eroticization. The first transformation is moral realignment where Todd transforms Hardin [Harry Styles] who is publicly known as a good guy to be a bad guy, by picturing him doing some violences. Second is character dislocation, where Todd changes One Direction‟s names, occupations, looks and family background. Third is personalization, where Todd inserts the version of her through the character of Tessa. Fourth is emotional intensification, where Todd puts Hardin into two kinds of emotional crises, namely: feeling traumatic and love. Last is eroticization, where Todd illustrates the characters performing many erotic scenes. In general, the reason of transformation is fanfiction gives her fully freedom in exploring her imagination in the story.
