Penelitian berjudul Human Treatments toward Tigers in India as depicted in R.K Narayan’s A Tiger for Malgudi ini bertujuan untuk menjabarkan perlakuan kontradiktif manusia terhadap hewan dalam novel. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menganalisis data utama. Sumber data untuk penelitian ini adalah novel berjudul A Tiger for Malgudi dimana isu penyiksaan hewan dan hak untuk hewan yang berhubungan dengan perlakuan kontradiktif ditemukan. Teori utama yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah ekokritisisme. Teori pendukung yang berkaitan dengan isu penyiksaan hewan dan hak untuk hewan juga digunakan untuk menjawab rumusan masalah. Pertama, peneliti menggunakan teori tentang penyiksaan hewan untuk menjabarkan perlakuan negative oleh manusia terhadap hewan dalam novel. Kedua, teori tentang hak untuk hewan digunakan dalam perlakuan positif manusia. Dari penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa perlakuan negatif terhadap hewan dideskripsikan dengan menyiksa hewan. Ada dua jenis penyiksaan hewan yang disebutkan dalam novel. Yang pertama adalah penyiksaan hewan dalam bentuk hiburan. Bisnis hiburan yang kejam berdasarkan novel adalah termasuk sirkus dan kebun binatang. Yang kedua adalah penyiksaan hewan dalam perburuan. Dalam novel, perburuan hewan liar dan pelanggaran hukum konservasi merupakan tindakan negatif yang dilakukan manusia terhadap hewan. Perlakuan positif terhadap hewan dalam novel digambarkan dengan memperjuangkan hak untuk hewan. Poin penting untuk hal ini adalah kesetaraan untuk manusia dan hewan dan kebebasan untuk hewan. Kesetaraan untuk hewan dan manusia menggarisbawahi simbolisme pertapa dan representasi ajaran Hindu yang berkaitan dengan hubungan antara manusia-hewan. Dalam kebebasan untuk hewan, penggambaran hutan sebagai bentuk kebebasan mewakili usaha memperjuangkan hak untuk hewan sebagaimana digambarkan dalam novel. Oktaviani, Pranantika. 2017. Keywords: animals, human, treatments, animal abuse, animal rights The research entitled Human Treatments toward Tigers in India as depicted in R.K Narayan’s A Tiger for Malgudi is aimed at describing the contradictive treatments, both negative and positive ways, conducted by human toward animals in the novel. This research uses qualitative method in analyzing the main data. The data source for this research was the novel entitled A Tiger for Malgudi where the animal abuse and animal rights issues which related to the contradictive treatments are found. The main theory applied in this research is ecocriticism. Supporting theories related to animal abuse and animal rights issues are also used to answer the research questions. First, animal abuse theory is used to describe the negative treatments conducted by human against the animals in the novel. Second, the animal rights theory is applied in the human’s positive treatments. From this research it can be concluded that the negative treatments toward animals are described as abusing animals. There are two main types of animal abuse mentioned in the novel. The first is animal abuse in entertainment. The abusive entertainment businesses based on the novels are including circus and zoo. The second is animal abuse in hunting. In the novel, wildlife poaching and violation against conservation law are considered as negative treatments conducted by human against animals. The positive treatments toward animals in the novel are depicted as establishing the animal rights. The important points for this part are equality for human and animals and freedom for animals. The equality for human and animals highlights the symbolism of a hermit and the representation of Hinduism philosophy related to human-animal relationship. In the freedom for animals, the depiction of forest as freedom represents the animal rights establishment effort as depicted in the novel.
