Abstract

The concept of gender has begun since childhood. A child will pass a psychological development in identifying gender. By observing environment, a child will shape her/his gender identity. The identification of gender during childhood is also depicted in the first novel of Iain Banks entitled The Wasp Factory. Related to the issue of gender, this research analyzes on how the main character, Frank Cauldhame, conceptualizes her gender identity. Since this research analyzes gender from psychology perspective, Psychology in Literature is applied. To reveal the process of gender identification, Kohlberg’s Gender Development and Erikson’s Lifespan Theory are used to support the analysis. Afterward, the method of this research is descriptive qualitative which consists of data collection, data categorization, and data analysis. The research shows that Frank Cauldhame as the main character in The Wasp Factory conceptualizes herself as a superior man. She also has concept about man and woman which is different from common people. First, she has a concept that woman is bad since her mother left the family and all men surrounded her were left by their woman. Consequently, she hates woman the most. Second, she also conceptualizes woman as the inferior as she watched on television. This concept leads her to think that woman who gives a birth is inferior while man who born with killing sense is superior.
