Abstract

This research analyzes the women’s language features and the accuracy of translation of the fan subtitles in the film Barbie (2023). This research is under the field of translation studies. Since it discusses the phenomenon of fan subtitle as part of Audio Visual translation. The researcher set out to investigate the accuracy of translation and to describe the women’s language features expression in the dialogue of the Stereotypical Barbie as the main character and another female character named Gloria. This research employed a sociolinguistic approach to identify which utterances included women’s language features. This research uses a qualitative method. The researcher then submits the results to three raters who have been assigned to evaluate the quality of the translation of each utterance. The findings revealed that there are 8 women’s language features in Barbie (2023), which are 49 data intensifier, 35 data lexical hegdes or fillers, 11 data rising intonation on declarative, 8 data empty adjective, 7 data avoidance of strong words, 6 data super polite forms, 5 data emphatic stress, and 1 data tag question. Also, for accuracy translation result there are found 101 data with accurate categories, 20 data with less accurate categories, and 1 data with accurate categories out of a total of 122 data found. Based on this finding, it can be concluded that the translation product produced by fansub in Barbie (2023) is more accurate than those that are less accurate or inaccurate. Nonetheless, several data points are less accurate or inaccurate because the translator derived misleading meanings from the context or misunderstood the use of hedges and language features.
