Abstract

Eurocentrism is more than just a perception. Beauty, a key cultural element, represents an individual or culture and influences social behaviors and perceptions. Socially embedded eurocentric standards measure an individual or society towards them. This research examined how Maleeka, a young African-American girl, overcomes the Eurocentric beauty norm in The Skin I'm In (1998). This research used a qualitative method since the data are in the form of words or utterances not numbers. Lois Tyson's postcolonial Eurocentrism was used in this research. The data were analyzed in Eurocentric beauty standards and intra-racial racism in the first section. Start with colorism then socioeconomic status which became Maleeka's obstacles in living her life at school. The second subchapter ended with mentorship and empowerment that helps Maleeka to go against the standards and find her own inner peace. Ultimately, this research showed how individuals resist the eurocentric standards created by their society. Therefore, eurocentric standards should not be used as a main benchmark in lifestyle, especially to bully people.
