Abstract

Presently, popular culture has already spread around the world with its positive and negative effects. One of the most famous popular culture kinds in the world is cinema. This research has two objectives: to identify and describe the icon, symbol, and index found in Star Wars posters through semiotic process. The method used in this thesis was descriptive qualitative method and purposive sampling was used to answer the research questions. The data source used in this research was from Lucasfilm Ltd. Official website (https://www.lucasfilm.com/productions/). The data were the signs contained in Star Wars promotional posters that are classified as icon, symbol, and index. The theory used in this thesis is Anna Wierzbicka’s Theory of Color: Semantics: Primes and Universals (1996). The result shows there are 70 icons, 67 symbols, and 76 indexes. The icons vary from major and minor characters, also the movie company and production logos. The symbols are in the form of facial expression, actor wardrobe, color, properties, setting, and movie title. Meanwhile the indexes consist of physical pose, movie scene, characters and properties formation, and textual credit from the producers. Based on the data, the researcher concluded that the use of semiotic signs and its functions made the material contained Star Wars posters more interesting and well-distributed, because the messages are wrapped in special and colorful imagery.
