Abstract

Ecoprinting is the process of transferring the colors and shapes of plants into fabric or paper. All types of plants can be used in the ecoprinting method and plants can be used as natural dyes to produce different colors, plants that have potential pigments can be used as natural dyes. Natural dyes are made from natural ingredients in plants such as flowers, leaves, stems, and roots. The types of natural coloring compounds found in plants are chlorophyll (green) in leaves, teak leaves (brown) in leaves, umbrella tree leaves (green) in leaves, cotton-leaf physic nut (light orange) in leaves, yellow cosmos flower (red-orange) in flower and peregrina flower (pink) in flower. The research aim was to determine the color intensity produced by ecoprinting using recycled paper. The research was conducted by qualitative and survey methods, namely the cross-sectional technique. The independent variables in this study were three types of recycled paper, a type of ecoprinting method, two types of mordants, and five types of plants. The dependent variable is the color produced on recycled paper that has been ecoprinted. The parameter measured is color intensity based on the Munsell Color Chart2 application. The results show the process of turning used paper into recycled paper involves several stages designed to break down old paper products and create new ones. Used paper is collected from homes, offices, recycling bins, or industrial sources. This paper includes opaque, lined, and HVS papers. The acid and base mordanting method may be suitable for recycled paper but due to several factors: Fragility of Recycled Paper: Recycled paper is generally weaker than virgin paper because its fibers have already undergone wear and tear. The use of acids or bases could further weaken or damage the paper, potentially causing it to break down or become brittle. Residual Chemicals in Recycled Paper: Recycled paper can contain residual chemicals, dyes, or inks that might react unpredictably with mordants, particularly with acids and bases. These reactions could cause unwanted discoloration or structural degradation. pH Sensitivity: Recycled paper may already have been subjected to various chemical treatments, and altering its pH drastically with acids or bases could destabilize the paper fibers. Various compounds present in the plants play a key role in producing colors and patterns. These compounds, primarily natural pigments, are responsible for the dyeing effects that appear on paper. Alkanoids are red-colored plant compounds, flavonoids are yellow-colored plant compounds, tannins are black-colored plant compounds & terpenoids are violet or brown-colored plant compounds.
