Abstract

This study aims to analyze how dystopian representation is portrayed in Asif Kapadia’s film 2073. As a docudrama, the film combines documentary realism with fictional storytelling to depict a bleak vision of the future dominated by fear, environmental collapse, and technological control. Gregory Claeys’s theory of dystopian characteristics is employed as the theoretical framework to explain how dystopian elements are reflected in 2073. The analysis focuses on both audio and visual aspects, using a mise-en-scène approach to examine how lighting, setting, costume, and props function in constructing a dystopian atmosphere and reinforcing the film’s social and political messages. The findings reveal that 2073 represents the five main characteristics of dystopia as outlined by Claeys. First, the threat of existential destruction. Second, ecological degradation. Third, technological domination. Fourth, cultural and moral decline. Lastly, extreme surveillance justified because of ‘war on terror’. The use of real archival footage strengthens the connection between the dystopian world of 2073 and current global conditions, emphasizing that dystopia is not merely an imagined future but a critical reflection of the threats already present in today society.
